The first auction of contemporary art in China

At a banquet held in the heart of the Forbidden City, an auction organized by Sotheby’s features a series of works by globally recognized artists who have created unique pieces for the event.

Sol LeWitt, Arman, Daniel Buren, Keith Haring, Raynaud, Zao Wou-Ki, Walter Dahn, Vasarely, among others, are featured in the prestigious collection selected by renowned art advisors.

It is the first auction of contemporary art in China. For the majority of Chinese attendees, it is an opportunity to discover what contemporary art is in the West. 

Arman smashes violins that he then reconstructs into one of his famous deconstructed sculptures, under the astonished eyes of the Chinese guests; César creates a compression using a Chinese flag... 

In New York, London, and New York, other buyers also participate in the event via satellite phone. 

This first auction paves the way for major auction houses, which are now established and highly active in the Chinese territory.

The entire proceeds from this sale will be donated to UNESCO to renovate a portion of the Great Wall of China.
